try learning western style archery ... then take japanese style 
instruction if you want something that feels seriously "goofy", but 
as you practice it feels more and more natural.  another similar case 
would be mounted japanese archery (there's a school/instructor 
somewhere in new mexico last i heard ...).  

point is what is "goofy" today may not necessarily be "goofy"
tomorrow .... if the "rules" and accepted modes of practice don't 
fit your particular case, nothing say's you can't try other options 
... some will work, some will not - on a perosn by person basis.  

those that laugh at you today may be your students tomorrow
