As both an artist and a judge I far prefer verbal comment when possible and
feel that it is my responsiblity as the artist to take notes while talking
with the judge or immediately after our converstation.  This generally
works very well for me.  The personal feedback I get this way is generally
much more useful to me in the future in developing my craft.  I can ask
questions about exactly what the judge is trying to say or as the judge
what the artist is attempting to do.  If the artist is not available then
written comment is the only way I have of communicating with the him and I
try to take advantage of this and tend to be rather long winded in my
writing or leave him information on how to get in touch with me so that we
can communicate on a one to one basis.

In my cases due to our Kingdom's loose standards for "Supportive Research"
- documentation it is sometimes difficult to determine exactly how
knowledgeable the artist is about the historical perspective of what he is
doing.  
I have been encouraging artists to organize their written Research more as
a journalism article and to answer the questions - What did you do? Who did
it?, When and where did they do it? Why did they do it? How did they do it?
How is your piece like and different from the historical and why? and an
anotated bibliography.  For people just beginning to do their research this
is a good starting point.
