In response to the questions about terminology, what about taking some one under your patronage? You would be their patron and they would be your artisan, or musician.  

Or, if you were teaching someone in a particular area, they could be your student and you would be their tutor.  

It is perfectly proper for nobles and heads of household to patron someone in the arts and sciences.  Or to hire them to be your brewmeister, your tailor, your tennis coach, or chief cook.  If they were a young person, have them be your ward.
