ANST - One Bad Apple

Jeremy, Why is it then that if we SHOULD take the stand
and deal with the one transgressor, that the policies and laws in place
within the SCA make it difficult to do so? Also, should this
transgressor be someone of rank, what makes you think that people would
be WILLING to deal with them? Yes, the SCA is a self policing
organization on certain issues. We do not allow wife beating (or at
least the folk stories would say that), we don't allow people to harm
children. But what about the more non violent concerns? Nobody will
stop someone when they have had too much to drink. I know there are
those known persons who have drinking problems whose friends keep an eye
on. But this is not the only issue where we negatively police
ourselves. I know of a case that involved a person (who had been
drinking) being too forward with a lady, MUCH too forward. Even though
Mundane legal issues were raised, the entire matter was hush hushed
within the SCA. I think that these sort of things need to be addressed
and dealt with, not swept under the royal carpet.

The usual beureaucratic response to just about any
problem is to make a
rule that screws things up for the vast majority, who
have not
transgressed. This is because it is much easier to
restrict everybody's
freedom than to deal with the individual malefactor.
While the path of
least resistance may be to set a global policy, (a word
that has the same
root as, "police"), it does have an element of
cowardice.

The courageous thing to do is to deal firmly with
transgressors, which is
precisely the reason that we don't do it more often. We
need to stop
letting the screw-ups ruin things for the rest of us.

The post to which you were replying had a certain self
righteous tone to it
(perhaps unintentionally), that we should avoid.
