With fear and trepidation I offer the following observation to the end of
the millenium discussion:

It seems this is an issue of perception versus technical fact.  The
viewpoint that the next century/millenium begins at 2001 is well-reasoned
and scientific--and emotionally/psychologically unsatisfying, as there's
something about that calendar date that makes one say, "Look, it's a new
century!" even if if your rational self is in denial.
