Why are you apologizing to me, Gunthar? I said the site was interesting,
poignant, and that many of the cases they make against the SCA cut me to the
quick... because I feel they have some validity. Particularly the bit about
us telling others that "this is how it was in the middle ages"... done it
many times myself without ever thinking that I needed to qualify that with,
"except there wouldn't be any women on the tourney field and there wouldn't
be any duct tape on anybodys armor and there wouldn't be any combat boots
and there wouldn't be any camouflage pants and there wouldn't be any wrist
watches and the swords wouldn't be made of rattan and there wouldn't be any
lycra tights..." etc. etc. you get my point. Are we failing to be
educational? I don't think so. But they have a point when they criticize
us for playing with our Arthurian rules of Chivalry (which I hold every bit
as dear as you do) and telling the public that it's accurate for a thousand
years. Perhaps our demo system could be bettered. Perhaps we could be
reclassified as a fraternity rather than an educational organization. I
dunno... but I do know that when I see these Routier characters I'd
reeeeaally like to be able to look the part enough for them to ask what
organization I belong to.

I feel exactly as you do on the chivalry issues... it's pretty shortsighted
to condemn any organization for being *nice* no matter what your position
is. It hurts and it's childish but it doesn't lessen their other positions.

Incidentally, Greg Rose is not a member of their organization (I checked
their roster). They do use quite a few folks in our areas words as evidence
in their favor... some you might even call icons of Ansteorra. If you (John
Q. Public) want to get into this topic, please go through the whole site...
there's a lot there to keep abreast of.

Muffling through the bandages on my ego,

Ritter Dieterich
