I apologize for causing you confusion on this issue; writing at 1:30 AM,
I meant to say, if *being king* is so horrible, why do so many people
want it?

You can draw new people into the SCA, form more groups in different
places, have more tournaments closer to home, etc., now, without busting
up the kingdom.  All it takes is the willingness to do it.  Forming
principalities and doing the things that increase membership are two
entirely separate things.  There is no need to weld them together in the
mind as so many people have apparently done.
