Being able to perform both, explain the differences, and why you made
the choices you did in the styles of performance, would suggest a
mastery of the subject beyond that of copyist or artist. 

I have no particular problem with either approach, but I believe the
skill is in understanding what you are doing before presenting a superb
performance. .

Of course, where music is concerned, I'm a poor, barroom singer who
could only judge the quality of the performance.
