thanks for bringing up that subject ... meant to do so a coupel weeks back 
but got busy.  many folks have piles of older, though still servicable stuff 
sitting around (looking at three AT cases, two 486 motherboards, random 
adapters, slower modems, a box of memory that is useless to me (though 
there was a art project they may be used for ...) ... all older class stuff that 
has come out of my machines at home ... ) but would assemble into a 
accepteble entry / temporary .  

every few months, i manage to throw together a 75-80% complete basic 
machine and donate it to a worthy friend / companion ... the only geas i lay 
on the recepient, that they pass along the gear to someone else when they 
get a better machine (most do in time).  downside, you end up being that 
persons designated technical resources (g) 

get a number of people together and pool the excess parts, who knows 
how many machines you could build
