you hit on the most important point of the whole discussion (being a life-long 
tejakanner something learned a long time ago ...), learning to keep hydrated in the first 
place so that emergency measures are not necessary ... ie: drinking regularly *before* 
you're thirsty and taking reasonable measures to conserve body water (stay out of sun 
if possible, wear loose light color clothing, minimise caffiene intake, and stay away 
from alcohol during the day ... )

and like your prep, have made it a point to keep diluted electrolyte replacers around in 
addition to the water supply (usually carry dual canteens when in field with extra water 
in the pack and a supply of the e.r. powder ...
