Well, to be honest, I wasn't speaking of someone in an emergency
situation either. In an emergency situation, one shouldn't bother with
taking fluids orally. 90% of that is simply urinated out. In an emrgency
situation, salt water is taken intervenously. The salt helps one retain
water. There are minerals other than salt in gatorade and powerade. And
salt taken orally about 24 hours beforehand actually helps prevent
dehydration by making one retain more water.
I was speaking of the dehydration that occurs from being outside on a
hot summer day. I was speaking of the dehydration that occurs in
fighters who've been fighting all day. Like I said, during exertion, one
sweats out more water than one can absorb. According to my basic biology
class in college, wtaer can be lost at a rate of 2-4 quarts an hour
during exertion (like running, or fighting), and the 'recommended'
intake per day is approximately 1 quart or more a day.
