Different strokes: Used to be, social acceptance and approval were enough
reward for good behaviors. Cautious of what reality I may be teaching a
child to expect, I give sincere thanks as praise, with positive eye contact
and body language. If another gives a child a rare small something more
tangible, the combination may be closer to a ratio of what they might expect
of life.

Now, "above and beyond" actions -- especially inventive ones -- *have*
triggered me into thoughtful rewards, usually teaching them something fun
and useful, or occasionally a personal favor marking the incident. I have
garb that's missing buttons I'll never replace because each reminds me of a
youngster, and an occasion, for which I cut the button off and sewed it to
their belt or garb, on the spot. Complete with flowery forsoothness and
curtsies. And a hug.

And, later, seeing them showing it to other children, saying I cut it right
off my sleeve, and why.
Ronnie.
