ANST - Alexandrian Symposium

Greetings all!

As Gunnora has mentioned recently, we are trying to finalize the class
schedule for this year's Alexandrian Symposium. There is still room for a
couple more classes, and there are some I would really like to see.

First, we have nothing on period practice of Islam and Judaism. It would
be a shame if the Symposium couldn't offer something on those subjects. I
feel very strongly about this and, if I have to, I will do some research
(or beg someone to research the subject) and present the class myself.
However, if you or someone you know has researched these subjects, let me
know if you would be interested in presenting a class. If there's a
conflict and you can't be there, an Alexandrian member could present the
class for you. I'm more interested in simply getting this information out.
I would like to attend classes on Medieval Judaism and Islam. I am
assuming others would be interested too.

On a similar subject, I would also like someone to do a class on the
Convivencia -- that period in Muslim-controlled southern Spain when all
three major religions -- Islam, Judaism & Christianity -- were officially
tolerated; a time acknowledged by many to be a golden age of culture and
learning.

Any other ideas relating to Religion and Religious topics in period will be
entertained. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, or know
someone whom my powers of persuasion might sway, please e-mail me and let
me know.

The Alexandrian Symposium is in Gate's Edge (Houston, TX) on August 21,
1999. Site opens at 830 am, classes begin at 10 am. Classes are conducted
in mundane dress, with a costumed revel to follow.

Confirmed classes at present include: Sacred Space in Viking Religion and
Law; Holy Wells and Celtic Water Veneration; Catharism and the Albigensian
Heresy; Varieties of Monastic Experience -- Monks, Nuns & Friars; The
Bogomil Heresy; The Great Schism; The English Settlement of 1561; Feeding
the Soul -- Food & Fasting in Russian Orthodoxy; Sex and the Russian
Orthodox Church; Celtic Christian Spirituality; Relics & Reliquaries; the
Business of Pilgrimages; and others I can't remember right now.

Thanks for your attention. Mistress Gunnora is working on the website even
as we speak. It should be up and running by next week, and will have an
on-line registration form attached.
