Armies didn't wear uniforms but the bands of men-at-arms raised by every
feudal lord were REQUIRED to wear the livery and badge of their lord, AND the
lord was expected to supply such livery. This is the origin of uniforms.
Study the Wars of the Roses better if you disagree with me, but two battles
were lost because opposing sides had the same livery colors and the badges
were so similar as to appear the same.

No, the army should not wear a uniform, but all the fighters of barony X (who
are not fighting for someone other than their own baron) should wear the
livery colors and badge of EITHER their barony OR their Baron. There is
nothing wrong with a shire wearing its own livery either.

Is this too much to ask? Probably. But it would add to both the spectacle and
realizm of a war.
