Oops!  Let me clarify.  Yes, judging can be gruelling and thankless, but it
does have lots of rewards.  There is nothing I like better than to be able
to make a useful suggestion than an artisan can really use, unless it is
the fun of getting to leave largesse for entries that impressed me.  And
the greatest reward of all is to see an artisan improve over time, so that
one day we welcome them into the Laurels Circle.

I've gotten aware over time of the problems with judging - I now have my
spouse and apprentices stationed to head me off, hold me down and make me
eat and drink from time to time during the day.  And I will go on judging,
since it's part of the job that I accepted when I accepted the Laurel.  

But it is a good thing too for folks to know that Laurels' lives are not
all spent resting on our laurels.  We put in a lot of work and effort as a
group, and certain members go completely out of their way to help the
populace in general, the arts community in particular, and constantly
enrich our kingdom... and several of these folks are or will one day be
candidates for Pelicans based on the work and the love they give our
kingdom.  The Laurel is not just a rank - most of us consider it a job.
And we do our best to live up to the damands of that job out of honor, out
of duty, and out of love.
