I, for one, have been dressed in garb in many places and situations and
I recall no experience that I would term "negative attention". 

At Sunday morning breakfast at at Gothic War this year, there were
overheard comments to the effect of "what a sight to wake up to!", in a
context implying that our brightly colored garb might be tough on the
eyes of the average hang over victim. Was that negative? Not in my eyes.

I have been approached several times with a variety of questions,
ranging from the typical "Are you guys in a play?" to serious questions
about what we do. One of my favorites was a discussion with gentleman in
a WalMart parking lot in Hattisburg who wanted to know what a middle
ages man would carry in a pouch. His contention was that the middle ages
man would not have to hide his wallet, pager and keys, so would not
carry a pouch. I explained that it would have to have been a very early
period person indeed to not carry money or keys. He countered that most
people were peasants and would not have money and keys. I explained that
in the SCA, all are nobility. He responded with an "Ah, I see.... Do you
think that's realistic?" I explained the concepts of authenticity vs
practicality vs the ideal society that we all weigh in our personnae and
he seemed satisfied with that.
