earlier myth ... retrofitted into the historic/mythic charlemagne by
the later church.  often assumed to be a classic historical redaction
made to support and legitimize the lineage and authoirity of a new
state (france).

point of the exercise was to point out that "spear" was simply a
symbol that could be manipulated for political purposes.  someone
probably coneveniently planted a common spear and then "found" it as
prophecy foretold. some crusader probbaly woke up one morning and
found someone had boosted his favorite infidel-sticker during the
night and then noted it lashed to a stick in front of the army.  

why does certain scenec from "life of brian" come to mind ????

as i read the musings, it's not about the actual thing, it's about
the image of the thing and how that image can be manipulated.  but
then dosn't it often come back to symbolic spin- doctoring,
especilaly in most secular and religious political organizations ????
