not to mention that most of the cultures in the european and
meditteranean have legends where sacred spears figure prominantly. 
these legends flowed / blended into the later christian mythos. 
offhand i can think of several references to spears in the myth and
legends of several of the indic and celtic peoples i am familiar
with.... all who valued spears highly in their day-day and recurrent
themes in their cultural symbol sets.
 
consider it one of the most powerful sky-phallic symbols .... which
makes the image of the crusaders following a "sacred spear lashed to
a pole" even more humerous (g)
