ANST - Period Fabrics

I keep seeing woodcuts and period (my period, sixteenth c.) paintings
showing clothing made of huge volumes of flowing fabric. Also common are
extremely large flags that seem to be made of a similar material, but light
enough to be handled by one man. Is this mystery fabric silk? Are there good
(ten foot rule) substitutes for silk?
