Lady Radegunde of Tours forwarded the following info to me on a neat
ceramics class coming up at the Southwest School of Art & Craft in San
Antonio. I realize that a 13 week class committment may be too much for
those of you who are aren't locals, but you never know...

1071| Hispano-Moresque Pottery
Diana Kersey
Thur, May 31 - Aug 23 | 6:30 - 9:30P
McAllister Ceramics Studio, Ursuline Campus
Tuition: $210 Lab: $60 (13 weeks)

Islamic Moors invaded Spain from North Africa around A.D. 700, and potters
came with them, bringing knowledge of tin-based glaze and gold and copper
lusters. In Spain the potters found tin for their glazes and used copper,
manganese, iron and cobalt, creating blue, purple, yellow, green and brown
glaze decoration. Wares made utilizing these techniques were highly
decorated with a combination of Spanish and Arab motifs. It was not unusual
for Arab calligraphy and scenes from Christian tales to be painted on the
same ware. This intermediate/advanced level class will study these techniques
in-depth, and work to appropriate and combine the Hispano-Moresque forms,
glaze, and colorants into each participant’s current style and manner of
working. Work will be fired in downdraft gas kilns using low-fire terracotta
clays, opaque tin-based glazes, and oxidation atmospheres. Luster firing
will also be explored. It is important for participants registering in this
class to understand that it is a low temperature class; therefore, high-fire
stoneware will not be included in the class content. Students will be
required to load and fire their own work under instructor supervision.

This will require approximately two days of morning and afternoon hours from
each participant during the class. Those unable to meet this requirement
should not enroll in this class.

Enrollment is limited to 12 participants.
