[Ansteorra] Re: Feasts and Special Diets

I have at different times been on various restrictive diets - currently I
prefer a low-fat diet that includes less butter and cheese. If I eat butter
and cheese now, they do bad things to my lower intestine. Needless to say,
those are staples in your average SCA feast. Cheese appetizer, Cheese Goo
(AKA Toasted Savory Cheese), Cheese and leek soup, Cheese and butter soup.
All of these I have seen served at events, and many people love them.
Most often I just choose not to eat them, but there are events where I see
the printed menu and realize I can not eat any of the feast without having
to spend the night in the privy.

The easiest solution? Pack your own feast! Don't blame the cook or expect
someone cooking for 80 to stop and make you a 'special' dish!
A quick trip to your local grocery store and you have a pre-cooked hen,
bread, salad in a bag and grapes all ready to go. Pop the hen in the cooler
and go! Want beef? HEB carries pot-roast in a tub. Another good meal could
be German potato salad (pretend the potatoes are turnips), pickles, sliced
roast beef from the deli and some good spicy mustard or horseradish sauce!
Sure they aren't all period, but they can pass in candlelight. Now there
are so many prepared foods available cheaply that anyone could easily do
this! You know what you can and can't eat, don't expect anyone else to
know. For the events I am not sure about or the menu is not pre-printed, I
ALWAYS carry an emergency stash... a can of Dinty Moore and crackers.

I will still sit with my friends and enjoy the evening and happily eat my
own food while they enjoy the feast. Sometimes my friends will allow me a
nibble of their feast (just to see how it tastes and do justice to the cook)
and I will share some of my fruit or beverage or whatever else it is I have
that they like. Sure it is cold, but after a hot day, I don't mind.
Besides, if I wanted it hot, it would not take a lot to plan ahead to heat
it up.
