I was 9yrs old the first time that I babysat and the kids ages were 9mos
and 2yrs. We lived in the same appt. complex and My parents were home in
case of an emergency.

There was recently an article in our local newspaper regarding this topic.
There are no laws as to the age a child may be left alone. The age and
maturity of the child, the time the child will be left alone (day, eve.,
etc.), the lenght of time, and the closeness of neighbors should all be
considered. Also, preparing children to be left alone should be done
gradually if at all possible with ever lenghtening trips to the store or
such to both test the child's ability and to accustom the child to being
alone.
Generally, children of age 10-12 may be able to be left alone for short
periods of time, although some as young as 9 may be able to be left alone
for a short period of time. The older the child, the longer they can be
expected to cope with staying alone.

The same is true of babysitters. The age and maturity of the child being
babysat, the number of children the babysitter will be responsible for,
 the
lenght of time the child will be with the sitter, the time of day, and the
closeness of neighbors should also be taken into consideration.
