Caladin,

   I have seen someone make a similar flask by using rice instead of sand.
Pour in your rice, soak your leather real well in hot water, and then fill
the rest w/ hot water.  The rice soaks up the water, swells, and bulges out
the leather very nicely.  When it is all done, just let the rice dry and
pour it back out and continue w/ the pitch/wax treatment.
