There was an event when Octavia was Princess that the children were designing
their heraldic emblem (or just painting) on cardboard heater cut outs.
The kids really got into it and spent a couple of hours on it, skipping other
activities so they could finish their shields.
As children's activities ended Octavia requested that the children display
their shields on the walls during court and then brought attention to them
during court.
Those kids were just bursting with pride. It may have been their proudest SCA
moment.
I've wondered just how much this recognition will affect those children in
the years to come, possibly being the single event that turns a future peer's
interest to the SCA but even if it'll just be a fond memory that's good too.
