OK, I have to respond now. What is wrong with the term "troll"? I always
thought it added a bit of style or panache to have a "troll". It's so far
from mundanity. And I work troll at every event for Namron. And I happen
to think it's a cute term.

We're starting to get into being politically correct here.

One of the things I love most about the SCA, is the right to be just how you
want. Political Correctness was completely lacking at Ansteorra's 25th,
when we were doing shots at Miguel and Conal's stepping down party (by the
way, whoever the young lady was who insisted on showing us her "great tracts
of land" THANK YOU!!! and VIVAT!!!)

I think there are going to be a number of individuals who will leave the SCA
if we are going to be forced with the concept of political correctness. And
I'll be one of the first (ok, now I KNOW some of you will be in favor of
this).

If you want to ban a word because it sounds "mean", what does it matter if
the replacement words don't "sound" mean any more? It's the same meaning!!!

Fat. Horizontally enhanced. Gravitationally gifted. Overweight.
Circumferentially increased. These all mean the same thing. But two of
them hurt people's feelings. Truth be damned!!! Let's just be nice and
make everyone happy!!!

I think we all know that we will never keep everyone happy. Some of us just
like to be upset.

I'd vote that we keep the terms that have made the SCA what it is. Troll?
Has anyone every been upset because they were called trolls? Anyone?

Let's just agree to not take offense unless offense is intended. If offense
is intended, then you call them nasty names!!! We all do it anyway.

If I am addressed as Lord, and not Honorable Lord, I promise to get upset to
whomever dares to imply that I have no honor!!! (See my point?)

I'll get off of my little soapbox here. But please don't get so caught up
in the words that you don't see the true meaning. Some of us just have the
gift of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time (and I've got an ex-wife,
several ex-friends, and a veritble bevy of ex-girlfriends who will attest to
my skills there). Troll. A modification of the word toll. Intended to be
a cute joke. Which it is. Also adds a bit of character/style/panache to
the SCA.

I promise, I do not intend to offend anyone here. But if you are offended,
then you didn't get the meaning of my words.

It seems to be most insulting to describe those hardworking volunteers at
the front gate, those people that have had to take classes or be trained
just to deal with all those neccessary annoyances, those wonderful hard
working friends and then we call them TROLLS?

Trolls are icky, nasty, uncouth, uncivilized inhuman like things and should
be banished or killed when encountered for they are dangerous to the
population. Don't you listen to your fairy tales?

Really. Can't we just call it what it is? A "toll booth", a "gate", a "front
desk" or even "check in", "sign in" or "registration"?

Those people are too hardworking and too valuable to insult that way. Be
careful what you say for, someday you may show up and it may be a real Troll
that tries to take your money! Then how will you pay the gate fee?

Greetings From Alina Unto All:

I Also can we please stop using the word "troll" to describe the
front gate. I always have this image of little green men when the word
"troll" is mentioned.

Wishing,
Alina
