I doubt that there is anything in Ansteorran policy on this, although
if there is I'm sure someone else will speak up.
What you seem to be approaching is the concept of fealty in the SCA
and perhaps how it compares to it in period. The SCA is less than 40
years old, and we're still trying to figure this out. :-) I suspect
you are likely to get a variety of answers from different people.
You might find these files in the CHIVALRY section of the Florilegium
to be of use, though.

I don't know of any specific Middle Ages or Renaissance "smiley".
After all, if you look at many period manuscripts you will see how
scrunched together many of the words are. They seem in many cases to
have had even less bandwidth than we do today, so the 'smiley's
probably got dropped for efficiency.:-) I think most gentle folks
just use the standard ones. You should keep in mind that many folks
are still using text only based systems so the graphical 'smiley's
may not get there.
