I have a question. What is Ansteorran policy as far as rule of law? I personally would do anthing that the crown or peerage request as I know that they are not going to make outragous request me. I know that no one in the realm is going to call me up at some time and demand that I come clean their lawn or baby sit their kids whith out a request for and inquiry into my time not to metion that that is non SCA duty. However, If I were at an event an a member of the crown or peerage or attendants to the crown told me instead of asking me to lets say carry some thing to help some one out then of course I would. To me the willingness to "obey" crown and peerage is that I can trust that the powere will not be abused. That is not to say that there have not been accusations of misuse of power before in SCA, I am sure that here have been just as there usually are in any group.I personally have never seen a misuse of powere in this group. I do not get to lay very often and I am still learning
the ways. If I have offended any one on this list please accept my most humble apology.

P.S. Does any one know if there are middle ages or Renasissance smilley out in cyberspace if so could you tell me?

My understanding of the SCA as a whole is that we are one of the few Kingdoms that follows "The King's Word is Law" ruling. Now I could be wrong as I just heard this from someone else years ago and did no research myself.

One distinction I've seen is that some people (not all, by any means)
describe themselves as royalists to indicate that they unthinkingly will do
whatever the Crown says. A matter of the when the Crown says "hop" asking
"How high?" on the way up.

My personal belief is that peers and nobility have not just a right but an
obligation to advise the Crown. I don't just mean making award
recommendations, either. If the Crown is about to step into a big steaming
pile of something that should be used as fertilizer on the Back 40, I think
we ought to advise them of the fact and offer alterative paths. If the
Crown insists on stepping into the poo, well, at least it was an informed
decision, if not perhaps wise. And I've had people get in my face about my
belief in this obligation, telling me that they are "royalists" and that I
am "a bad peer" or even "a bad person" for daring to disagree in even the
smallest way with the Crown.

Looking at medieval royalty, most were very constrained by their nobles and
councils. I can't think of a king who had the power to disregard the
opinions of his nobles, frankly (though I'll guess there might be a couple).
I like having the Crown have the final say-so, and so in that respect I'm a
royalist... but I also believe that a *wise* Crown pays careful attention to
those who have wise suggestions to make, be they nobles, peers, or absolute
beginners with no awards. (The unwise ones who ignore such warnings and step
into the aromatic stuff provide objects of long laughter for many years to
come when we tell "You won't believe this..." stories of The Far Past).

Greetings Ansteorra,

In a few short days, Bjornsborg will host a fabulous tournament, Deeds of Heroes. In order to be considered one of the Heroes, in order to receive wordfame, a medallion, a drinking stein and yes, still more loot, you must be sponsored by an artisan who offers a small token of his or her art to the Baron and Baroness. You also MUST give the Baron and Baroness a letter of intent.

Thus far, we have received two letters of intent. Surely there are more than two eager, honorable men and women who wish to be judged Heroes. We are accepting postal and email letters of intent. Currently, the deadline for letters of intent is Wednesday, October 12. Once the morning of the tournament has come, however, if anyone attempts to give a letter of intent, it should be knock-our-socks-off impressive. Otherwise, he or she will be invited to fight during the tournament but will be barred from being named Heroes. Email letters may be sent to cternus at texas.net . For postal mail, look for our information at the event website or in the back of the Black Star.

Any questions may be answered by the website for the event, which is
http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/Bjornsborg/

Looking forward to seeing our many friends,
Radegund of Tours and Godwyn Alfricson
Baroness and Baron of Bjornsborg

In some kingdoms, they have a "Curia" which makes most of the deicisions
about how the kingdom is run, and the Crown is much more of a figurehead.

Does anyone out here cast pewter coins or know someone who does. Looking for someone to cast about 150 of them and I have the mold already, and need them done by Feb. 1st.
