The good and bad of badges:

First let me start with a little D&D analogy. There is no difference in the actions between Lawful Good and Lawful Evil people. It is not what they do, but why they do it that is different.

Some do badge types of things, because it gives them something to do. Some get them because they want to learn something. Some will do it to accomplish something. Some will do it because they are just having fun. Some will do it for recognition. Some will do it for bragging rights.

In other kingdoms they have a college called Ithra. You can get an Ithra degree. Different people get Ithra degrees for a variety of reasons, ostly listed above. Kids can get them too, but the classes are not really aimed at children. There are even levels of degrees. When in Ansteorra, I took many classes simply because I wanted to. In AnTir, I do the same.

Why would badges be good...It would give many youths something to do in the SCA. They actually have very little availible to them. As it is right now, it is basically an adult's game. People who do not wish to participate do not have too...just like fighting.

Why would badges be bad...It would take time away from the adult's game.

So it is both good and bad.

  your servant,
  mahee
