I think it's far more likely a 21st century thing vs. a 19th century fantasy 
thing.

If the historical Diarmaid were to have seen a woman slaving away carting a 
table across a field, he's far more likely to think "Now *there's* a good 
hard worker."  If he were to see a -Lady- so struggling, he'd be very 
courteous and ignore her, and not rub her nose in the fact that she was poor 
and couldn't afford a servant.
