This is very good information - I'd like to reiterate your last statement,
since it was an answer to the original question - DON'T put salt in unglazed
pottery - see explanation below.

Thanks so much for the info.
And thanks to everyone who commented on my uninformed question.

I have just gotten this string on leaded glazes and clay, I hope this will
help everyone.
First all clay has lead in it if it has been mined from the earth.
A lot of glazes have lead in them these are refered to as none food safe.
lead itself is a toxin that will cause severe retardation in very young
children if recieved in suffiecient quantities mg/day type thing
as for the story of the wife who killed here husband by leaving a small
unglazed spot in his cup would have taken to many decades to kill him (one
of those urban legends)
Bisqued pottery (fired) still has lead in it enough to exceed the fda and
epa standards and over time can make you ill, that is why they (the
Goverment) required lead free glazes in products to be used for food and
this is even strictor in california where they have prop 15 leaded warnings
on items not fit for human consumption.
Lead is actually added in some instances for the color effect it has
especially for RED the industry is now coming out with lead free colors that
are just as brilliant as the leaded ones.
Unglazed pottery is (outside the piece) great for helping keep contents cool
when wetted (evaporative cooling draws the heat out of the bisque)
As for salt dont use unglazed pottery, salt will leach lead from your stuff
faster than regular water, as will any acidic liqued will also.
