I can't agree with more.  ABSOLUTELY!  In the same way a job promotion can 
and does tend to re-focus and re-energize an individual.  The salient point 
of my previous statement hinged on the word "just" meaning "solely."  I was 
simply saying that our awards are not SOLELY cookies meant to pat someone on 
the back and say "good job" but they are ALSO responsibilities.  And you are 
quite correct, I think most folks, on line and off line, who are weighing in 
on this conversation and who are not, do exactly what you suggest in your 
first sentence...they're not "waiting" for any award, they're just doing 
what they like doing.
