I would love to hear more stories of how people have chosen to be
> who they are and what elements they include in that and why.

Susan, here's the bare bones of my persona. I'm an Italian lady during
Elizabeth I's time. I came to England to marry the man I was betrothed to
as a child, but he died while I was enroute. Even though it was out of
anyone's control, to send me back to my family would dishonor my family,
therefore my betrothed's family sponsored me into English society. Being
Italian explains any little goof or gaffes I may make, and also explains the
differences in dress and attitude.

I eventually married a noble of my own country whom I met while in England
(Chass). He is also a merchant (not uncommon in Italy) and to cement a
merchant relationship with an Ottoman Turk which would open trading routes
for both merchants, the Ottoman Turk adopted me as his sister and heir,
giving me the name Hazine.
