Iowa was a 16" gun set, Ive seen her sister ship the Missouri. Ymato
(SP?) and the Bismark were both rated for 18", though if your talking
about weight of shell as it traveled down the barrel, I believe that the
German Bismark.
off the top of my Head I don't recall the ISA or the Alaska, but I think
that the largest functional shipboard Guns ever fielded at any time in
the history if Naval warfare was the 18" gun, so I would argue that the
Ymato (SP?) and the Bismark share the title, though as I mentioned
before, I believe that the Bismark's shells were slightly longer and
therefor had more weight to them.
Truth be told, I do not believe that this was ever a ship commissioned
that could simply shrug off a direct broadside from the main guns of
either of these two dreadnoughts. Only the largest and heaviest warships
ever built had a reasonable chance of even surviving a broadside from
them, never mind mustering a return fire. So while I appreciate the
academic considerations of the question, I would respectfully add that
anything 16" or over qualifies as just plane unstoppable. If it hits,
your wishing it hadn't real fast.
