Opps...  Bismarck and Tirpitz (SP?) had 15 incher, reeked hell with Allied 
shipping.  Iwoa class battleships (Iwoa, Missoursi, New Jersy, I don't 
remember the 4th, but want to say Washington) had 16 inch guns.  The Alaska 
Class was a Battlecrusier class toward the end of the war that didn't get 
finished.  The Isa(SP?) was Yamato's sister ship that got turned into a 
partial aircraft carrier and sunk by a US sub.  The Yamato wins the prize 
with 18.2 inch guns.  The Montana class battleship had 12 16 inch guns and 
was designed to go toe to toe with the Yamato.  But after navel aviation 
sunk the Yamato, the Montana class was never finished and what had been done 
was sold for scrap.

Actually as for surviving hits from the big boys; go back to the battle of 
Leyte Gulf, I believe.  Where a batch of Jeep Carriers and destroyers and 
destroyer escorts chased off the main Japanese attack force.  Those poor 
ships didn't have enough armor in them to make the armor piercing rounds 
explode in the ship.  They went right on though and went off underneath.. 
The ENEMY got scared and withdrew.  One of my favorite navel battles of 
WWII.  Many heroes at that battle.
