[Ansteorra] question about metal

I do not know of a place off the top of my head that has sheet brass with a hammered finish. The process is done with the round side of a Ball Peen Hammer on an Anvil. I use a 16 oz ball peen that the ball has been polished to a good finish. Any defects in the striking surface will transfer to your hammered piece much in the same way a coin die leaves it's impression. For a hammered finish you don't really have to strike the surface so much as let the hammer fall. A 16 oz is plenty to do the job on brass or other jewelers metals with out adding any extra muscle to it. It is repetitive and tiering and hard on the wrist.

A couple things to remember Hammering does thin the metal and stretch it This can be important for some body wanting to make something like a Circlet which can only be a quarter inch wide. for that you would need to cut your blank a little narrower than 1/4 inch and then hammer it so that the final produce will be approximately 1/4

You also need to start with a thick enough metal to make an impression. personally I don't do a hammered finish on anything lighter than 20 gauge and would prefer 18 or heavier.

Happy hammering
