Very interesting...
It was being sold to me as a newcomer's household type thing...
not as disability enhancement...
I do know that there is at least one SCA yahoogroup dedicated
to Disabilities... but nothing "state sponsored"...so to speak...
but the SCA doesn't have the ability to cater to every segment of it's population...
it's hard enough to get volunteers to do basic administrative functions...
I wonder if anyone has done a website with suggestions for dealing with such things... it would be helpful to Hospitilars to have a site to send people to
as a resource for such things...

guild. It's not for newcomers specifically, it's for people who have
chronic pain, chronic illness, or other disabilities that make it difficult
for them to participate as fully as they would like in the SCA. We discuss
ways to hide the modern mechanical items that we must have simply to
function on a day to day basis, so that they aren't as glaringly obvious
that they are not period. Recent discussions have included disguising a
bedside commode, and another was a period solution (actually in persona) for
a "white cane". The guild is also a support group, as many of us share
problems, illnesses, pains and medication types.
The Guild of St Camillus de Lellis is not meant to seperate guildmembers
from the rest of the society, but to allow us to participate more fully and
with less obvious distractions. Yes, we "ignore" eyeglasses, wheelchairs,
canes, etc... but if we can come up with solutions that make it less obvious
that we have these modern items, doesn't it improve the general ambiance of
events? The guild is also a sounding board for members who are having
issues with health, doctors, and even sites or event stewards. It's a
source for education, compassion and support. Personally, I feel that it's
made it easier for myself and my husband to participate and has given us a
number of ideas on disguising or hiding modern mechanical necessities in our
camp, increasing our efforts to have our encampment lok more period.

Lady Isobel,
What I don't understand about your guild is...
the duplication of effort.
The SCA already has a mechanism to help newcomers
imperfect though it is...
It seems to me that your efforts would be better served to
uphold the structure of the SCA rather than section people
off from it by having this "Guild"...
Could you please explain?

Isobel de Kirkbryde wrote: There is a "structure"
built into guilds in the society. The Kingdom Guild Heads and the House
Heads for the smaller groups are a mere formality. In reality, the guild is
VERY flexible. You don't even have to "belong" to the guild to join the
list and participate in discussions across the Society -- even out of the
country.
Those who CHOSE to take on the roll of Guild Head or House Head
predominantly take on the responsibility of getting the information out
about the Guild's existence and that there are people out here with
disabiltiies who are trying to make our participation in the SCA "more
period" and certainly more fun.
As Guild Head for the Kingdom of Ansteorra, I have tried to let folks know
about the Guild, participate in demos to let the new folks know what
research and adaptations can be made. This is a HUGE job for one person in
the Kingdom and I rely on others who are members to help carry the message.
NO ONE, let me repeat this, NO ONE is being asked to join a household or
household like group. We communicate more on email than anything else.
I will warn you that our discussions take interesting turns. For example,
there was a whole thread about how to hide a personal toilet so that it
doesn't stick out like a sore thumb and announce its presence to everyone.
Other discussions have included canes (both load bearing and for the
visually impaired); decorating wheelchairs and scooters to "hide" the
moderness, how much information needs to be told to site Chirurgeon upon
arrival to an event; service animals; and many more.
Please don't let the charter scare you away. We are just folk who let it
all hang out and talk about stuff out in the open and support each other
when the chips are down.
