I have heard stories: Michael of Monmouthshire riding
into court on a shield a la Surfboard, Sir Emrys'
knighting, The Impervious shield of Sir Erasmus, and
others. Now I do not know, or barely know, any of the
people involved in these stories, but they are
indelibly burnt into my memory. I'm sure pictures
were taken at the time (maybe not of Sir Erasmus), but
they could not possibly live up to the larger than
life images I have of these moments. In many ways the
"ephemeral" arts of song and story can outlast the
"permanent" arts of visual reproduction.

I do not wish to denigrate the photographer's art, and
I know that many do want pictures of the important
events of their lives, in and out of the SCA. But we
might do well to remember that there is more than one
way to make our history permanent, and some of them
are more in keeping with the ways of life we wish to
(re)create.

Yes, but the point is someone has to tell the stories and someone has to
hear them and remember them.
(hint, hint)
You know of Michael of Momouthshire and Sir Emrys but do you know who was
the first captain of the baronial guard for your group? Do you have a picture
in your mind of what Steppes Warlord tournament looked like at camp Burnett?
(And we thought it was big back then.) How some of the children who are now
adults in the SCA looked? Anyone know stories of Leonitus or Fredrich? What
we looked like at the first Gulf War and compare it to now? And What did
that founding Baron and Baroness look like? Would you recognize them when the
came to visit? Who made the first crowns for Ansteorra? Who made the first
coronets for Elfsea?? Is there a connection there? All these people are important
to our history.

Pictures are good and they help but more importantly the memories need to be
recorded on paper with the pictures so when those who are here that remember
are gone others can read and remember the history we make in the SCA.
Please make sure your group is keeping up with it's history.

So take pictures or not??? I will say yes please take pictures. Just try not
to intrude as much as possible. Flash when needed. :)
