I have sometimes wondered at the custom of candy on valentine's candy because candy was something a "nice" lady could accept.
Clothing was acceptable gift in the middle ages but it needed to be a purse or veil. Personal items like shifts or shirts were reserved for lovers. A noble lady could give a shirt to a young man in her service. I know one romance that has the young man getting one that the "gold" embroidery wasn't gold but a young girl's hair. The Lady of the hold gave it not the young girl so it was"proper".
