In the mundane world that provides the money for me to play this game,
I do E-mail security to earn that money. Grouply does not have a very
good reputation in my eyes or those of my colleagues elswewhere in the
community of folks who do my job. As I understand it, once you give it
your ID and password (what a security hole!), it will send these
invitations out to everyone in your addressbook. There are more and
more "services" that will do this.
Many lists (e.g., various Freecycle lists in Oklahoma and several of
the electronics-oriented lists to which I subscribe) will drop any
subscriber whose ID sends a Grouply invitation to that list.
Consider the context: someone (or some piece of software, more likely)
inviting everyone in your addressbook -- including the Ansteorra list
in this instance, and other lists in other instances -- to join some
ill-defined and badly-behaved thing called "Grouply".
That's inappropriate. I don't blame the person or persons, since I
strongly suspect that they were unaware of this behavior, but I very
much want the folks on this list to understand how I think it works,
so that they can avoid being blamed for such behavior on other lists.
