[Ansteorra] Looking for a Laurel

What kind of knowledge and experience in heraldic tabards are you looking
for?

Are you looking to make a tabard? There are quite a few books on heraldry
floating around that have information about how tabards originated, how they
have been made and used both in history and in the "here and now".

Even though I am not a member of the Order of the Laurel, I do have some
experience with heraldic tabards. I made a pair of heraldic tabards for
Raven's Fort shortly after their elevation to baronial status. All I did
was applique the RF arms on the front and back panels, and the College of
Arms badge (vert, two trumpets in saltire or......or two gold trumpets in an
X-pattern on a green field) on the "sleeves". I used satin because I
thought that would be the dressiest fabric, but I ran into two huge
problems. First, satin crawls under a sewing machine needle (I ended up
using stitch witchery to hold the charges in place while I stitched them
down), and second, satin does not breathe like cotton or wool, and so the
tabards are really uncomfortable in the summertime (even though they are not
stitched up the sides, and thus are open). My recommendation would be to
use a heavy cotton (not quite as heavy as duck cloth), and remember to wash
the fabric before cutting and stitching together--otherwise the colors will
bleed all over each other, particularly the red. (One trick I've heard is
to put a handful of salt in the water when you wash the red the first
time....that will slow down but not halt the bleeding)

If I remember correctly, my dimensions were 20" by 30" for the front and
back panel, and 15" by 20" for the "sleeves".

Again, not a Laurel here, but I do offer you my own experiences, for
whatever they may be worth.

Pax et bonum,
