I forwarded this riddle on to a few non-SCA folk and one of them replied thusly:

"Det er tydelig at Ivar skulle kjøpe sin egen båt 
tilbake. Jeg vet dette fordi jeg er av den norske 
kulturarven."

I did not know that this particular friend had Norse blood in him! I had to seek online help to decode all those dots and slashes.
