I think our point is that if it is still a practice now, it came from Period.  Typically, christian women covered their hair after they were married. Or wore it up, etc.
 
You will find some of the "fashion"changes through history were the result of the church's opinion of women.  We were, after all, the temptress'.
 
I know for the period I am supposedly in, women who were married/mothers/etc covered their hair. Now, whether that was something that happened w/i the homes...?  But many illuminations and paintings show hair coverings and veils (typically attached to some sort of headpiece) worn by women.

 
As for just veils... ummmI haven't seen much evidence of that having looked through many a book of illumination and paintings.  But part of that could simply be the fact that the headgear was a way to HIDE the hair.
