[Ansteorra] Veiling

Recently, I attended a traditional Catholic mass, and about 90% of the women had their hair veiled. Does anyone know if women in our period were known to be veiled at all times for religious reasons, as opposed to fashion reasons? I've become somewhat enamoured with the idea of veiling. =D
