Roman title structure got complicated sometimes. On occasion, there
were as many as five crowned Autocrats. Without a strong hereditary
principle for the throne, the easiest was to attempt to ensure
succession of one's children was have them crowned before you die,
thus when you die there's already an Autocrat in place so there
shouldn't be a succession struggle.

Like every other expedient to deal with the lack of a constitutional
succession procedure, it was only sometimes successful.
