A paleontologist working at Cornell has published an interesting
theory about how the monks responsible for famous insular manuscripts
like the Book of Kells were able to paint intricate patterns at such
tiny scales without the benefit of high-quality lenses <http://
www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Sept09/KellsAngels.html>. He suggests
they used a technique modernly known as free-fusion stereocomparison,
which allowed them to use their own eyes to magnify what they saw by
10 to 30 times.
