A paleontologist working at Cornell has published an interesting  
theory about how the monks responsible for famous insular manuscripts  
like the Book of Kells were able to paint intricate patterns at such  
tiny scales without the benefit of high-quality lenses <http:// 
www.news.cornell.edu/stories/Sept09/KellsAngels.html>.  He suggests  
they used a technique modernly known as free-fusion stereocomparison,  
which allowed them to use their own eyes to magnify what they saw by  
10 to 30 times.
