Unless you're at the end of the line, and the folks in front were a 
bit too greedy.

Although that *is* a perfectly period occurrence. I once read about a 
feast in period, where *all* the food arrived borderline-frozen 
because the kitchen was so far from the hall, and it was mid-winter. 
At the same time, the hall was so hot due to overcrowding that people 
were breaking windows just to get some air. (No, I'm afraid I don't 
remember which book. One of the hazards of working in a library: you 
see lots of cool books, but rarely have time to note down the title 
and author for later.)
