What I do when I am making mine is to measure the depth of the hole and
then I mark one shaft with a Sharpie and then use that to go through and
mark all of the other shafts then I start gluing and assembling.

I to have found that making a small hole at the top of the APD shaft
before trying to put the shaft in works best.

Another thing that I have found is that the new blunt heads have a hole
for the shaft that is NOT quite straight. I tried several times and
several heads and shafts and could not get them to get FULLY seated to
what I knew was the bottom of the hole (since I had measured it before
hand). What I finally did was take the shaft and used a grinder to taper
the last 1/2" of the shaft and not I can get the shaft to go in to the
full depth.
