[Ansteorra] Very interesting story on concussions

Two times that stand out in what is left of my addled mind are as follows.

1. When I had first begun, (pickups at my first Warlord in fact) Fritz hit me straight down on the forehead while looking up from the ground. the second time i blacked out for a few seconds. My head hurt for 3-4 days and I was most certainly concuss. My padding had failed and on the second blow my helm struck me on the forehead and cut me open. The force felt like it compressed my neck more than anything else.

2. Northern regional fighter practice a few years ago (yes that one) I was a touch over zealous in my charging and got out ahead of everyone else. I was hit with 2-3 glaves on the crown of the head. The next thing I remember I was being held up and not unconscious on the ground because Rikr had me pinned against the fence. Again it felt like my head had been shoved into my neck and my head hurt for 3-4 days.

Both of these were a force straight down. I don't think more mass would have been the answer. In fact it prob. would have added to the problem.

Jean Paul,

Fair enough...  If I remember correctly, my helms have all been fairly
stout.  The only time I've had an issue was the padding in one of my first
helms had failed.

In regards to mass weapons, I was taught early on by Earl John Peregrine
and Baron Guy LeStrange that we don't need to hit as hard with a mass or
great weapon due to the sizes and mass of the weapons.  But yet, I know that
there are folks that will go and completely blast each other...

There really isn't a right or wrong here, though.  I know the padding in my
helm surpases the standard written out in our rules and will continue doing
so.  And like you said, JP, as the experienced fighters we need to watch out
for our friends, whether they be experienced fighters or new.

Thanks for y'alls input.

Liam
