[Ansteorra] How to Trap a Laurel

Wihtric,
Yours is a tough art to compete with as a static display, but there are some good ways to show it off.  Try it as a performance piece.  Read a passage in Old English, then your translation.  It can't be very long, since the first part will mostly be interesting for the foreign sounds of the words, but your audience will get no content.  Or you could have someone help you out by providing subtitles on cards for the audience.  If you could do a play like that it could be a riot.
Mistress Brynhildr (who rocks quite mightily) does a great class on Old Norse where you get to learn some useful (and frequently funny) phrases.  I took an Old French class years ago at Pennsic that was fantastic.  Essentially you're giving people the keys to unlock a ton of old texts and deepen their relationships with their personae.  Please don't call your art inane.  If it weren't for folks doing what you do we'd know far less about the middle ages.

Subject: Re: [Ansteorra] How to Trap a Laurel

Greetings!

I unfortunately do not get to play as much these
days as I would like due to mundane concerns, but I would like to step
in that, while intimidating as could be for me, I really appreciated my
first LPT last year.  It was a deep learning experience for me and,
thanks in great part to Mistress Hanna, it went from looking like I was
doing my homework for school to at least something like a display.

I admit this year, though not going to LPT, but Steppes Artisan, that I
still struggle with display concepts.  For those who do not know what I
do, I do Old English and other language translations.  Having no skill
at calligraphy or art, finding a way to convey this
inane skill to others is doubly hard.  Last year, other than Mistress
Brynhildr, just kind of politely let their eye glaze over as I tried to
explain the process and what I do.  Unlike sewing and other visual
crafts, people find little interest.

So I personally I enjoy all the advice Laurels can put up.

Gódspéde!
