On this point at least I want to call b*ll$**t. I've paid plenty of
class fees over the years to cover the cost of the materials and
photocopies provided by the instructors, and though I'm not a peer,
I've never been out of pocket for a class I've taught. And in all the
years I've been doing it, I've never seen anyone object, but I've also
never seen anyone turned away that genuinely could not afford the fee.
We have always made it work. And if you think materials and copies are
all is all that is covered, I've seen teachers that were particularly
in demand paid for their travel expenses too. And I've never seen
anyone complain and say they shouldn't have been reimbursed for that
either.

I don't mind pulling my weight financially, and I'm stunned at the
number of other people who seem to want to be free-loaders and cloak
it under the guise of "hospitality". The people who don't want to
partake of the communal services have been given the option of opting
out, so in my eyes, if you're still arguing it's because you think
you're entitled to getting something for nothing. I totally get if you
can't pay and want to work out another, non-financial way in which you
can share your portion of the burden and still enjoy the benefits, and
I think no one objects to that arrangement. But if you're objecting to
fees because of some sense of principal, sorry, you're looking like a
freeloading jerk to me. Or someone who would like to see the whole
camp do without (or one person pay for the lot so we don't all suffer)
rather than paying a nominal fee.

And this is where I need to shut up and walk away because I'm sure a
whole lot of people are going to hate me now.
